the dancers of desire

deep within the dark streets
of a world you’ve never known
a cast of characters young and wild
have come in for the show

you close your eyes and hope by chance
they haven’t looked your way
for if they have the game’s begun
and forever they will stay

they taunt and tease and poke and prod
to open up your eyes
they tell you everything you want
they tell you all their lies

you will relent, cause fate decree
they find your pathway in
they have your flesh, they have your soul
now dance you to their whim

sadly is your life now
sadly you’ve gone astray
you look only to their mighty god
to give another day

you walk the thin and narrow
you walk their kind of path
there is no time for foolishness
there is no time to laugh

but when your life is over
and when your breath is through
those beguiling friends will be long gone
and all you’ll have is you
