my mind

Today, it is raining in Portland. One of the the two main things you expect here this time of year. Gray rainy skies and the verdant growth of Spring. Two opposites that meld together so unexpectedly. It seems that I never remember what actually happens each season. I know the basics, heat in Summer, colored trees in Fall, cool wet weather in Winter and . . . well, Spring doesn't really have anything stuck to it in my mind. So I'm surprised again this year at how beautiful gray and green are together. The constant newness of the world is amazing to me, even though I've been here 35 years.

This Spring I'm planting more. And though I grew up on a farm with plants all around in the fields and gardens, I am still surprised at how a seed becomes a plant. How growth is measured in days not years. My son looks at his pumpkin plants every day and of course I'm dragged along and I can see what he sees when he screams "Oh my gosh!! Look how big they are!" They do get bigger, just as he does.
