High PricesI grew up on a dairy farm in Central Minnesota. The land to the North was flat, wooded and peppered with mostly small but sometimes large lakes. We didn't use the lakes much. They were there, but no one we knew, who wasn't retired like my Grandfather, used them. The importance of these lakes changed considerably when I grew up and moved to Minneapolis, about two hours South. Actually, two hours if it wasn't a Summer Friday night with no chance of rain for the weekend. If it was, the traffic was tiring. Still, we didn't use the lakes but finally they affected my life. We just returned from visiting Minnesota. It seems the price of land around the lakes has skyrocketed. Just having a lakeview gives you money to retire with, but still no one I know will benefit. Little did we know the lakes were so important. I guess city life has it's positives but being near a lake is precious. Another reason to preserve the natural world. Now if only family farms were sought after in the same way. After spending a week walking my old haunts, I know they have the same restorative effects. |
